Understanding Surgical Procedures : Hemicolectomy – Hemicolectomy involves surgical removal of a partof the colon (large intestine). Depending on the part of the colon that is removed, the operation is named as right hemicolectomy (removal terminal 10 cm of small intestine, caecum, ascending colon and part of transverse colon), left hemicolectomy (removal of part of transverse colon, descending colon), sigmoid colectomy and transverse colectomy.

This operation is performed for a number of conditions such as colon cancer and non-cancerous conditions i.e. Crohn’s disease
