The color of a person’s nails was often used to indicate their social class. For example, only the pharaoh and his family were allowed to wear red nail polish. Nail polish was also used in ancient Greece and Rome. In Greece, women would often paint their nails with a mixture of beeswax, egg whites, and vegetable dyes. In Rome, women would use a variety of different colors to paint their nails, including red, blue, and green. Nail polish fell out of fashion during the Middle Ages, but it made a comeback in the 19th century.
